NC: America's first logbook (?) finally retired!

An email from Llama Mama alerted me to the Max Patch box being in a sodden condition. I replaced the box and contents today, except for the stamp. And I removed the soggy copy of the April 1998 Smithsonian article which inspired this and all letterboxes in the U.S. ever since.

Many of the stamp images have run or completely faded away.

A viewing will be held next weekend at the First Annual (We Hope) Southern Highlands Gathering.

The old logbook will not be buried nor cremated.

The new logbook is inside a Lock & Lock box, hopefully dry forever!

I have to say that unfortunately it is not the first letterbox logbook retired in the US. Elaine and Jerry's Bluff Letterbox in Groton, CT has gone through four logbooks tucked away inside an old Nalgene bottle. The box is currently under relocation at this time as the area it was in had been trampled due to "over-boxing". I just wanted to make sure that we were being good stewards of the outdoors.
